Heavy Lifts as the Colombelles Bridge Takes Shape
The Future Colombelles Bridge is a major infrastructure project within Ports of Normandie, involving the construction of new reinforced‑concrete bridge piers and formwork structures.
As part of the works, large precast elements were produced on the Calix quay from mid‑March 2026 and transported by barge to the installation site, where they form key structural components of Pile P2 and Pile P3.
These included a 100‑tonne precast unit for P2 and a set of 67‑tonne half‑ring segments and 45‑tonne elements for P3, all designed to shape and support the future bridge structure.
Challenge:
The project required lifting and positioning heavy, irregular precast elements within a constrained quay‑side environment. Coordinating barge transport with installation windows added operational pressure, and the geometry of the half‑ring segments demanded precise load distribution across multiple lifting points. Ensuring stability, alignment, and safe handling throughout each lift was essential to maintaining progress on the bridge structure.




Solution:
LGH France supplied a complete lifting configuration tailored to the weight and geometry of each precast element. This included modular spreader beams to achieve the correct lifting geometry, Modulift Multi‑Lug for accurate connection points, and high‑capacity slings, shackles, and sheave blocks to ensure stable, controlled lifting motions from barge arrival through final placement. Each configuration was matched to the centre of gravity and handling path of the specific element being installed.
Outcome:
All elements were installed safely and on schedule. The lifting arrangement enabled accurate placement of both the 100‑tonne P2 unit and the multi‑segment P3 assembly, reducing on‑site risk and supporting a smooth workflow for Eiffage Génie Civil. The collaboration contributed to steady progress on the Future Colombelles Bridge and the broader infrastructure improvements across Ports of Normandie.
