Up, Up, and Replaced: Pont des Américains Footbridge
The municipality of Horbourg‑Wihr in France has begun upgrading the ageing footbridge at the Pont des Américains in France, an important crossing used daily by pedestrians and cyclists. Replacing the structure required a lifting plan capable of handling heavy loads and coordinating multiple cranes and rigging elements across several phases of work.
Challenge
The project involved removing the existing 43‑tonne footbridge in a single controlled lift, followed by the installation of two new spans weighing 28 tonnes each. Every movement needed to be executed accurately to ensure safety and stability, particularly as the lifts relied on different cranes and hoisting systems working in sequence. Mediaco required lifting equipment that could deliver reliable load control, stable rigging and consistent performance throughout the operation.
Solution
LGH supplied a Modulift MOD 24 spreader beam, forming a central part of Mediaco’s lifting arrangement. The original 43‑tonne structure was lifted and removed in one piece using spreaders and pneumatic hoists, with the MOD 24 ensuring balanced load distribution and stable handling throughout the operation. The installation of the new spans followed in two phases: the first 28‑tonne section was positioned using an LTM 1230 (230‑tonne) crane, and the second using an LTM 1650 (650‑tonne) crane. In both cases, the spreader beam maintained safe lifting angles and supported the precise placement required for the new footbridge.
Outcome
The ageing footbridge was removed cleanly, and both new spans were installed with accuracy and full control. The lifting configuration supported by the Modulift MOD 24 spreader beam enabled safe, stable and efficient execution from start to finish. The upgraded crossing now provides improved access for pedestrians and cyclists in Horbourg‑Wihr.
