(Case Study) Erskine Bridge - Scaling New Heights with Suspended Mobile Platforms

Erskine Bridge
Posted in: Case Studies

Project Location:

Erskine Bridge, Scotland

Project Overview:

The Erskine Bridge was opened in 1971 and awarded “Category A” status by Historic Environment Scotland in 2018

The Objective:

The bridge needed major structural improvement and repainting. C Spencer, who were awarded the job, proposed a series of suspended mobile access platforms to provide access to the underside of this high elevation suspended box bridge.

The Challenge:

LGH’s customer (NSS), were faced with a challenge of providing substantially sized (20 x 10m) mobile platforms to cater for the high live loadings expected on the unit, in order for the structural work to be completed.

As required by the project, they (NSS) needed to transfer six high level access platforms across the bridge, from West to East. That’s where LGH came in.

Firstly, the platform (or rig) needed to be weighed. LGH provided radiolink digital indicators to accurately and precisely weigh the platform.

The Solution

The platforms then needed to be raised up to the bridge, we supported by providing the following equipment:

-          X4: Tirak Universal Hoist 3000kg SWL (415v)

-          X1: Tirak Rope 14mm Dia. 65m 3.0t SWL

-          X8 : Hand Chain Block 3t SWL 3m HOL

-          X8: 5t Roundsling x 4.0m EWL (8.0m Circ)

-          X5: Alloy Bow Shackle Safety Pin 8.5t WLL

-          X20: Alloy Bow Shackle Safety Pin 6.5t WLL

-          X4: Radiolink Digital Load Indicator 5t SWL along with accessories which were X2: Alloy Bow Shackle Safety Pin 6.5t WLL

Throughout the project, the platforms are lowered, moved further across the bridge, and then raised.
