DIPPY THE DINOSAUR GOES ON TOUR
Dippy, the Natural History Museum’s iconic Diplodocus cast, is touring the UK visiting 8 museums over 2 and a half years.
The Situation
Assembling and disassembling 292 delicate pieces that make up a 70ft dinosaur to 8 difference locations, we have even crossed the sea to get Dippy and the equipment to Belfast! This is a complex lift with a very fragile artefact and required LGH expertise in the planning and understanding of how the lift would take place.
LGH Equipment Used
Roustabouts along with bespoke lifting beams to suspend between the Roustabouts which were made specially for the project. Also used beam trolleys, clamps, manual chain blocks, slings and shackles. Numerous hand tools, access equipment and lighting.
The Solutions
Having the correct equipment ready to be delivered on time and collected as soon as the assembly was completed including using various pallet trucks to get the numerous packing cases containing various fragile parts of Dippy in to the challenging space for assembly in the Museum.
The Results
The contract is still ongoing until 2020. So far, we’ve had successful transportation and usage of our equipment at each set-up across the UK. Now we are half way through the process, we have mastered the management of moving our many lifting products.
