A residential building company was tasked with installing a 200kg glass roof light onto a newly constructed home extension. The glass unit was to be positioned through a void in the roof before final framing and structural supports were completed.
Challenge
The original plan involved using a mobile crane to lift the glass roof light into position from the road. However, the budget did not accommodate the significant extra costs associated with a road closure permit and crane hire, both of which were required due to the site layout and access restrictions.
Solution
We supplied a portable gantry crane and chain block system as a cost-effective and practical alternative. This setup enabled the installation team to:
- Assemble the gantry crane on-site with minimal disruption.
- Safely lift the 200kg glass roof light through the roof void.
- Gently lower it onto temporary timber supports in preparation for final installation.
Outcome
The gantry crane and chain block solution provided a safe, efficient, and budget-friendly alternative to a traditional crane. The building company was able to complete the lift without the need for a road closure, saving both time and money. The glass roof light was securely positioned and ready for final installation once the supporting frame was in place.
