Do's & Don'ts of Mod Beams

Do's & Don'ts of Mod Beams
Posted in: Case Studies

Modulift® Modular Spreader Beams are the ultimate solution for diverse lifting requirements. Available in various capacities and configurations, these beams offer unmatched versatility and reliability. At LGH, our spreader beams range from 24t to 1000t. With their modular design and interchangeable components, these beams can be reused for multiple lifts, making them one of the most dependable and essential pieces of equipment on any job site.

However, as with all equipment, certain guidelines must be adhered to whenever using modular beams to ensure safe operations. Our blog delves into the Do’s & Don’ts when it comes to the use of Modular Beams.

If you need further assistance, our team of experts are on hand to support you and will provide all the necessary information you need when selecting a Modular Beam.

This short list of do’s and don’ts is intended to inform or remind you of those guidelines:

Do's:

  • Pre-Lift Inspection: Always perform a thorough pre-lift inspection of the modular beam and all its components (bolts, shackles, slings) before use. Look for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion that could compromise its strength. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific inspection points.
  • Load Distribution: Ensure the load is centred and evenly distributed across all corner units of the frame. This prevents uneven stress and potential failure.
  • Clearance is Key: Maintain sufficient clearance between the bottom of the frame and the top of the load to avoid any collisions during lifting.
  • Consult the Manual: Refer to the manufacturer's manual for your specific modular beam model. It will provide detailed information on weight capacities (Safe Working Load - SWL) for different configurations, proper assembly procedures, and specific sling attachment points.
  • Training Matters: Ensure all personnel involved in the lifting operation are properly trained in the safe use of modular beams and lifting equipment.

Don'ts:

  • Improper Sling Use: Never attempt a lift without using appropriate top slings rated for the weight of the load. Ensure slings are properly attached to the designated points on the corner units.
  • Hanging from the Struts: Do not hang any load directly from the strut tubes or flanges of the modular beam. These components are not designed to handle such a load and could fail. Modular spreader beams are designed only to take the load at designated points per the manufacturer's manual. Wrapping slings around non-specified lifting points is not permitted as these are only designed to work in compression.
  • Overload Risk: Never exceed the Safe Working Load (SWL) specified for your particular modular beam configuration and span. Exceeding the SWL puts immense strain on the beam and can lead to catastrophic failure.
  • Improper Sling Angles: Avoid rigging the lower slings at an angle exceeding 6 degrees from vertical. This creates additional force being applied to the spreader beam, overloading it and putting it at risk of failure. Spreader beams should always be configured correctly for the type of load it is lifting. an unbalanced load and increases the risk of the slings slipping or becoming overloaded.
  • Side Loading: Modular beams are designed to handle vertical loads only. Do not subject the beam to any side loading forces that could cause bending or twisting.

Additional Tips:

  • Use a calibrated torque wrench to tighten all connecting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications before each lift.
  • If you are unsure about any aspect of modular beam use, always consult a qualified lifting professional.
  • Remember, safety is paramount. If you observe any unsafe conditions during the lifting operation, stop immediately and address the issue before proceeding.
  • We can guide you through the selection process for your Modular Beam rental, ensuring you get the right equipment for your specific job. From understanding weight capacities to choosing the proper configuration, our experts at LGH will provide ongoing support throughout your project.
